In magazine ads and stories of the 1940s-1960s, people celebrate the nuclear family and American identity while enjoying capitalism, consumerism, and all that modernity promised to them. Blithely unaware of any hardship, they smile at new laundry machines, stride down the street with briefcases, drink champagne, and ride in large cars. In these mixed media collages, I present the obliviousness of these carefree privileged people by presenting them in or with outer space. In this state of elective oblivion, the figures represent the dangers of wearing blinders in America today.
